DIY Tissue Paper Topiary Tutorial

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 sheets of green tissue paper
  • Scissors
  • Styrofoam ball
  • Hot glue gun
  • Small flower vase or jar
  • Wooden dowel
  • Twine
  • River rocks or decorative stones

How to Make Your Topiary:

  1. Prepare the Tissue Paper: Start by cutting strips from the green tissue paper. Then cut the strips into small squares, aiming to keep them uniform in size.

  2. Crumple the Tissue: Take each square and crumple it into a small ball, creating texture for the topiary.

  3. Glue the Tissue to the Styrofoam Ball: Apply a small dot of hot glue to the Styrofoam ball. Attach one of the crumpled tissue balls to the glue. Continue this process until the entire surface of the ball is covered, leaving just a small space at the bottom.

  4. Prepare the Vase and Dowel: Insert the wooden dowel into the centre of your flower vase or jar. The dowel will act as the topiary’s stem.

  5. Attach the Styrofoam Ball: Push the exposed part of the dowel into the open area at the bottom of the Styrofoam ball. Be careful not to push it all the way through — just enough to secure the ball in place.

  6. Fill in Any Gaps: Check for any visible gaps or bare spots where the Styrofoam ball is visible. Add more crumpled tissue paper if needed, especially around the area where the dowel meets the ball.

  7. Add Decorative Finishes: Wrap a piece of twine around the top of your vase or jar and tie it into a neat bow. Trim any excess twine for a polished look.

  8. Stabilise with River Rocks: To give your topiary a final, grounded look, fill the vase with river rocks or decorative stones. This will also help keep the topiary stable and prevent it from tipping over.
